Understand the workload before choosing the infrastructure
The ecommerce operation had predictable changes in demand. Daytime trading and scheduled product launches needed more capacity, while quieter periods needed less. The external hosting bill was approximately £5,400 a month.
A useful cost review had to connect the application, trading pattern and infrastructure. I examined when capacity was needed, how the environment was used and how the recurring cost could be brought closer to that requirement.
Migration and scheduled scaling
I led the move from Webscale to Cloudways and developed scheduled scaling around predictable demand. Capacity increased for daytime activity and Friday product launches, then reduced during quieter periods.
This was part of my responsibility for the live ecommerce environment. The migration and capacity changes had to be coordinated with the platform, operational needs and ongoing trading.
The change combined commercial judgement with practical infrastructure delivery: understand what the business needs, select a suitable environment and make the new arrangement work.
The recorded cost reduction
External hosting expenditure fell from £5,400 to around £2,000 per month. The difference is approximately £3,400 a month, equivalent to £40,800 over twelve months. The percentage reduction rounds to 63%.
External hosting expenditure before and after the change| Measure | Amount |
|---|
| Previous monthly expenditure | £5,400 |

| Revised monthly expenditure | Around £2,000 |

| Monthly difference | Approximately £3,400 |

| Annualised difference | Approximately £40,800 |

| Percentage reduction | Approximately 63% |

Historical career result. The annualised figure is the monthly difference multiplied by twelve.
Look at the business cost and the technical cause together
A high hosting bill can come from the capacity arrangement, the application workload or the way the environment is managed. Those possibilities need investigation before deciding where to invest.
I consider performance, trading requirements, expenditure and the effort involved in a change. That helps an owner compare useful options, including improving the current setup, changing how capacity is used or moving the application.
Find out what your technology should be costing
The £1,500 Ecommerce & Operations Audit includes relevant hosting, API and integration expenditure alongside the sales journey and operation. It identifies opportunities and recommends a practical way forward.
Detailed infrastructure investigations, migrations and implementation can be scoped separately. If hosting is the issue you already want to tackle, we can discuss that directly in discovery and agree the work and budget.
